Goal-Setting Systems: Why Willpower Isn't the Fix

Shift your thinking from outcomes to systems

First, build the behavior, not the target. A system is the repeatable action that produces the result. Systems survive a bad week while outcomes sit on a slide until the next planning cycle rolls around and someone rewrites them (again).

Second, repetition beats intensity. A new leadership behavior feels like an unpaved road the first few times you try it: slower and more awkward than your default. That's normal, so don’t worry too much. The old default is a smooth highway you've driven a thousand times, so of course it's easier to fall back on. The more you travel the new road, the smoother it gets, until it becomes the path you take without thinking. You’ll get there!

Third, goals need a real feedback loop, not only a deadline. A date on a calendar doesn't tell you whether the behavior is sticking or really being ingrained. A regular check-in does the job: what did I try, what happened, what do I adjust? Skip the loop and you don't find out you've drifted off until the goal has already failed or been forgotten about.

That third piece, the feedback loop, is exactly where change falls apart at the team level too, not just the personal one. When plans shift and people start digging in, you need a way to catch the friction early, before it turns into a trust problem.

If a goal you recently set has quietly died on you this year (it has for me, too, nobody’s perfect!), think about whether it was missing a system, enough reps, or a loop to catch the drift early.

Pick one goal you already let slide. Don't set a bigger or more difficult one to replace it. Instead, build the one piece it was missing instead and get going on it again!
